MUSIC
Our Curriculum
Our music curriculum at Concord Primary School aims to enable students to:
Acquire and apply musical skills, knowledge and understanding through Listening, Creating and Performing.
Develop abilities or creative expression and communication.
Develop an understanding and appreciation of music in local and global cultures.
Cultivate life-long enjoyment and involvement in music.
Our curriculum follows the Experience – Concept – Application approach. During the Experience stage, students participate in music making and active listening. Concepts are first experienced before they are presented to make abstract ideas more accessible for students. During the Concept stage, key terminology is introduced. Music theory, standard and alternative forms of notation are taught during this phase. The Application stage follows the concept stage where students apply the concepts through activities such as performing and creating music.
The three stages are non-linear with the Experience stage being visited at any point to reinforce learning and understanding. Imitation, improvisation, eurhythmic activities, composing and solfege singing are present at both the Experience and Application stages. Dalcroze, Orff-Keetman, and Kodaly approaches are woven into the curriculum to facilitate meaningful music making.

These ideas frame how students experience art in meaningful and authentic ways. By learning from a diverse range of artworks—both local and international—students gain insights into different perspectives, cultures and artistic intentions. Exposure to artists and their works helps students make connections between art and the world around them, while also sparking curiosity and inspiring personal expression.
Our curriculum adopts an inquiry-based approach, where students are encouraged to explore and experiment with a variety of materials, techniques and tools. Through this hands-on process, they develop confidence, originality and creative thinking. Students also engage in discussions about artworks and present their own creations. These conversations nurture visual literacy, critical thinking and an appreciation of diverse viewpoints.
